Green "IT" is Good

Following on from our previous blog, IT Sanctuary members have confirmed that green issues DO have a place on the corporate agenda at their organisations.

In a poll on this site, almost one-fifth (19 per cent) of you told us that environmental considerations were ‘very important' in planning your IT operations, with a further 19 per cent saying that they were ‘somewhat important'.

However, the vast majority (62 per cent) still say these issues are ‘not important', which surprised us.

Perhaps this argument from Chris Gabriel, head of solutions at Logicalis might help in the debate: "The principal benefit [of green IT] is cost reduction. I've not come across one green IT initiative that hasn't been good for the bottom line, delivered IT faster or more efficiently, made a company more agile or more able to deliver faster services."

Our take: IT will become greener, whether through voluntary effort or through regulatory and legislative mandate. But if there are cost reductions to be gained, is it not better to jump, rather than be pushed?

I think we need to know more about our responders before we can really tell what's going on here. My feeling is that responses will differ depending on the size of the organisation. Also, those responsible for infrastructure are bound to be more focused on this than are developers. We need to drill down. Perhaps some of those who responded would be prepared to add a bit of background in a comment here?
